WASHINGTON, D.C. – Statement from Carol Joyner, Executive Director of Family Values @Work Action, on Trump’s attempted halt to all federally supported loan and grant programs:

“Rather than strengthen the federally funded programs that help millions of American families, seniors, and people with disabilities every day, Donald Trump has decided to cause unprecedented chaos. The directive to cut federal programs that people depend on is not only unconstitutional, but also cruel and dangerous. Right now, child care centers may have to close their doors. New moms may no longer receive vital support to purchase infant formula. Seniors don’t know whether their meal deliveries will continue. Families may not be able to pay for groceries or make it to work if child care and food assistance funds run dry. Americans still recovering from recent natural disasters may suddenly find themselves on their own. All to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.

The ongoing uncertainty surrounding this order is still doing incredible damage. A ‘temporary’ freeze of even a few days risks irreparable harm to millions of people. Aside from it being blatantly illegal, Trump’s authoritarian power grab betrays the American people, undermines congressional authority, and has created fear and uncertainty among those who are struggling to feed their children, afford rent, or receive health care.

We are heartened that state attorneys general, nonprofits, and others are challenging this unlawful and reckless action. Let’s be clear – these funds represent hard-earned, tax payer dollars. We are entitled to the government services that Congress authorized them to support.

Family Values @Work Action represents 17 state coalitions representing millions of voters. Together we are calling for our elected leaders–and especially our members of Congress–to hold Trump accountable and stop this blatant effort to subsidize his radical agenda at the expense of our social safety net. This directive must be rescinded.”
